Forum OpenACS Development: 5.6.0 Repository

Dear all,
it's a period I'm traveling a lot and I have some few evenings to spend... So I started to work on porting
OpenACS 5.6.0 to my Win32-OpenACS distribution.
In doing so I noticed that in the repository (https://openacs.org/repository) the section on 5.6 (i.e. https://openacs.org/repository/5-6/) is missing.
Is this something done on purpose?

Thanks in advance,
Maurizio

I'm not sure if it is still missing but it is certainly reporting an error.

I tried to install some packages from the "Install from Repository" link and it returns an internal server error from openacs.org https://openacs.org/repository/5-6/

Dear Cesar, I just cut&pasted the following test from https://openacs.org/repository/:
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
OpenACS Package Repository

Updated: Mon August 30, 2010 09:07 PM Europe/Vienna
Available channels.

5-7
5-5
5-4
5-3
5-2

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Update channel 5-6 is not there... But 5-7 is... Why?
Is 5.6 a version we need to forget about? I don't know.
To be honest I found all of this rather disappointing:
the channel is still not there... nobody took the time to explain why..., and so on....
BTW: it may also be the case that an explanation has been posted and I just missed it...

Hi,

This has to do with the release process for OpenACS.

As there are no optional packages tagged compatible for openacs 5.6 the repository has not been automatically created for that version.

Thank you for the explanation... is this information written somewhere?
If not, any time an "unaware" user will try to install/update software from the web she will notice this anomaly and suppose something is wrong with her installation, version of the software or the like.
And how come there are no packages compatible for 5.6 when there are some for 5.7.
Again which first impression are we giving to the users?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Maurizio

So far no optional packages have been tested and confirmed to work with openacs 5.6 and subsequently tagged by the package maintainer so they can be picked up by the repository builder.

Mainly this is due to the delay in releasing the next version of dotlrn, and unfortunately lack of volunteers to do this kind of work. Only one person is taking care of all this.

Don, if you are listening, is it possible to recruit a volunteer to test and release these packages outside the dotlrn release process?
