Forum .LRN Q&A: Community type of subgroups?

Posted by Tracy Adams on
I've tested adding a subgroup for both a class and a community
and found that the community_type of both subgroups is
dotlrn_communities.

Is this intentional?  I would like to understand what I should be
doing for my migration scripts.

Is select from dotlrn_clubs a reliable way to show only top-level
clubs?  Is this the recommended way?

This is intentional. Subgroups of classes actually behave
different from classes. So they shouldn't be classes. We thought
of making a community type called "subgroup" but we haven't
gotten around to that yet.

Yes, select from dotlrn_clubs is the right way to show top-level
clubs.

In what way is the 'dotlrn_community' type (subgroup) functionally different
from the 'dotlrn_club' type (community) and the 'department.class' type?
Are there any docs on this subject yet?
