ok i'm trying to get this up and running in linux, im an almost total newb, but my internship requires me to get this properly installed. I just dled the new 4.6 release and using AOLserver 3.3ad13.

As far as i know everything is configured properly, i get no errors when going to http://myip:port and it says my oracle driver is configured properly. So i proceed to install the data model by clicking next->
everything starts out well:

Done installing the OpenACS kernel data model.
Installed ACS Kernel, version 4.6.1.
Acs-kernel instantiated as acs-kernel.
Package enabled.
Loading package .info files ... this will take a few minutes

but when it starts to load the info files it seems to just go into an infinite loop with my log just repeating the following and not getting anywhere:

it just seems to be repeating and no progress is shown. I was having the saem problem under openacs 4.5 where it would hang on right about the same area.

Anybody outthere have any ideas what the problem is, all and any help is appreciated. Thanks to all & sorry for the long post.

The solution to this is propably just patience. This page takes an awful lot of time to load - on my 700MHz Laptop a few minutes. I think it's because it is parsing all xml of the .info files but I'm not sure. Try to access your server again without reinstalling anything and grant that page some time, it should work.

If you really want to speed it up you can remove some unneeded packages from the packages/ directory, but be careful not to remove ones that are part of the core.

As Tilmann says, it can take several minutes for this process to finish up.  It's not just parsing the info files it's storing information about the packages in various database tables.

Go off and have a cup of coffee or a beer or something then come back and if it's still running you might have a problem, but my guess is it will be done before you do.

I remember that I had this problem once too when first installing OpenACS on a slow machine. I just committed a changed message in acs-bootstrap-installer/installer/install-data-model.tcl that makes clear that it really can take a few minutes.

thanks people, i was able to get past this stage with some "patience" even though a day or two before i had waited for an hour and a half and it was still sitting there. I guess it must be this slow PII laptop im using but now im getting another problem when i get to this stage:

here it just hangs and doesn.t seem to progress. I can see it runnin 'jre' in my processes from the command line

/home/oracle/oracle817/JRE/bin/linux/native_threads/jre -classp

but when i try to run this command manually i get:
error while loading shared libraries: libjava.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

this thing is driving me crazy, i left it running overnight and this morning jre was still running using full cpu utilization but nada with the progress. I am not root nor do i have access to root unless i ask the head IT guy to grant me certain privileges.

anybody have any ideas what i might be missing here. And thanks again for all the help.

Something is wrong with your hardware or software, since I have tried to use OpenACS 4.6 on a p3 notebook inside vmware and it was not that slow.

Is it only OpenACS that is slow, check the other apps too?  Anyway hope you get to install OpenACS.

thing is im using the laptop to access linux with putty that is residing on a desktop machine that i believe is a fast PIII

it worked! it worked! all i did was set the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 in my .bash_profile and it worked. I'll be posting when i excounter my next problem. Thanks.
