OpenACS 5.4.2 Beta 1 is now available

Please download and test [1] the tarball.

PLEASE. I want to put an end to the trainwreck that has been the
OpenACS 5.4.* series of releases thus far, and testing BEFORE a final
release is made can help that process tremendously.

1. lazy caching of site nodes has been revoked (too many bugs),
hopefully a robust solution will be implemented for 5.5.

2. significant problems with acs-lang

3. search was broken for oracle.

Thanks for those who pitched in and helped (too many for me to try to
name, I'll forget someone if I do).

that dotlrn 2.4.0 is built upon, so please test!

The most powerful PG release so far has arrived.

Check the feature list:
http://www.postgresql.org/about/press/features83.html

And the release notes:

For curiosity from the release notes:

Concurrent large sequential scans can now share disk reads (Jeff
Davis)

This is accomplished by starting the new sequential scan in the
middle of the table (where another sequential scan is already
in-progress) and wrapping around to the beginning to finish. This can
affect the order of returned rows in a query that does not specify
ORDER BY. The synchronize_seqscans configuration parameter can be
used to disable this if necessary.

Spam forces email confirmation on registration

After a long time using only the honor system, openacs.org has been
forced to turn on email confirmations for new registrations. This
means new registrations will get an email where they must click a
link to confirm they are a real person.

Over the last few months spam accounts have been created to enter
postings into forums and even bugtracker and this is the simplest
solution to combat this problem.

The next .LRN and OpenACS conference will be hosted in Guatemala by
the Galileo University, from February 12th - 16th, 2008.

The conference is the 6th of a series which focuses on the
development of community based web sites (primarily built with the
OpenACS framework) and on community based e-learning environments
(primarily built with the DotLRN framework). The conference offers
multiple activities for users and developers of the framework as well
as for people interested in the mentioned topics in general. It is as
well an opportunity to present and discuss you own work with the core
developers and influence the development of the framework.

Also will be an e-learning conference, for the 2nd. International
Conference organized by Galileo University, for this specific day we
expect about 150 participants.

The detailed information about the conference and the submission
details is in: http://ges.galileo.edu/conf2008/feb2008
(the page will be updated periodically as the rest of information is
available)

The conference will take place in two locations, first in Guatemala
city at the Galileo University facilities (tutorials & e-learning
conference), and for the .LRN / OpenACS days in the beautiful
Antigua Guatemala city (40 mins distance).

Please, pre-register at the conference site to help us planning and
to meet your interests as good as possible.
