Audit Tables

I would like to see a more 'aspect oriented' approach to some of our database activity. The current audit facilities for ecommerce (and at least one other package - not sure which) - embed audit data into application tables. I'd like to see us alter this to create audit on an existing table using triggers but without altering the actual schema/field structure.
