Shawn - if you publish content from the CR it does land in the file system much as you suggest.  Now, the publication model has had problems (bugs) and issues (more bugs) in the past and perhaps today but the general notion is that by publishing the content + template into the file system, serving it only requires the file look up and template processing rather than the database hit required to serve unpublished content from the CR.

Don,

Is there an application that publishes content-repository content, so that I can see this in action? I'll install the CMS if that's the only way to do it.

Also -- I understand the idea of merging content with templates, but why is that necessary? The ACS-templating docs tell me that templating doesn't require the database at all. So you can publish the content directly and still get templating, without the database hit. It seems to me much preferable to get the content directly, perhaps with its metadata in an accompanying XML file.

Take care,
Shawn
