Back when theme-zen was under development, we discussed which keys to use for access keys; not a simple decision since they easily clash with the ones set by the browser itself for its menu options.
Yesterday the subject came up at aDeNu (UNED) and it appears that there's a "non-written" agreement to use numbers for them.
Based on that, the UK and Canadian governments created a standardized set of accesskey shortcuts as follow (http://www.webaim.org/techniques/keyboard/accesskey.php#standard):
