The Lustre
cluster file system sounds awfully complicated, but is in production
use Lawrence Livermore and some other supercomputing centers.
And it supports full POSIX file system semantics - which
means you should be able to run an RDBMS on it. I've no idea whether
anyone has actually done that or how well it works, though.
