For the porting process, can I use PostgreSQL 7.1 instead of Postgres 7.1RC1 ?

Yes, use 7.1.

RC stands for "release candidate". The rc series came after the betas, but before the actual release (which was 7.1).

If you've not installed yet, PG 7.1.1 should be out tomorrow or Wednesday.  This fixes a minor problem with pg_dump (nothing fatal, just an annoyance requiring a simple workaround).  Might as well wait at this point...I know I'll be upgrading all three of my systems the minute it's out.

Don,

Did the %TYPE for function arguments make it into 7.1.1 in the end?
Or don't we know yet?

It won't, no.  It really was cutting things tight since the patch just  came out a few days ago.
