Forum OpenACS Q&A: OpenACS new installation: problems

Hi,

I have been looking for a community software for a long time,
and I've been reading the forums for a few months.

We really like OpenACS, and I think it is (by far) the best solution
for our needs.

We just installed OpenACS 3.2.5 with PostgreSQL 7.12 and
AOLServer 3.12+ad patch on a FreeBSD 4.2 server.

The URL to the first community on the server is:

http://www.godserver.com:7000/

I am having quite a few problems though, and I would really
appreciate if anybody could help me working them out.

I searched the forums both here than at arsdigita.com, but I
could not find a solution.

My intent is to compile a document with the solutions, and post it
here and on our main site.

We are having a few problems, but I would like to start with a
major one.

*1*

When a member of the community posts a very long article
anywhere:
in the news  http://godserver.com:7000/news/ or
in the neighbor section  http://godserver.com:7000/neighbor/
the preview of the post looks fine, but when the article goes live,
it gets cut off.

See for example:
http://godserver.com:7000/neighbor/view-one.tcl?neighbor_to_n
eighbor_id=11

I suspect the problem does not come form an OpenACS "bug",
but from a PostgreSQL issue.

*2*

Categories

Adding a new category:
http://godserver.com:7000/admin/categories/category-add.tcl
from the admin account does not work.

If, for example, I add the category "test", with the new Category
Type 'test", I get a new page with a weird pulldown menu
Category type:

<th align=right>Category type</th>
<td>
<select name=category_type>
<option selected>H?v`H?vR°?¶
$yb?ew_category_type=test
</select>

you can see this here:
http://godserver.com:7000/admin/categories/index.tcl

It seems that something gets corrupted when trying to add
categories.

Classifieds

I cannot add a new domain:

If I try to add a new domain
http://godserver.com:7000/admin/gc/domain-add.tcl

I choose a name, and assign myself as the primary
administrator (using my registered e-mail address: mailto:igb@igb.net)

I get a new page with this URL (very long);

http://godserver.com:7000/admin/gc/domain-add-2.tcl?domain_i
d=12&full_noun=test&domain=test&user_id_from_search=3&fir
st_names_from_search=Mario%20P%2e&last_name_from_se
arch=Bontempi&email_from_search=igb%40igb%2enet

which gives the following error:

Server Error
The requested URL cannot be accessed due to a system error
on this server.

How can I fix these problems?

Please, help us.

I can send the admin login via private mail, if needed.

Thank you very much

Mario P. Bontempi

News post is limited to 4000 characters (see /www/doc/sql/news.sql). You can fix it by changing table definition to use PostgreSQL text data type, but do you really think that news (as in brief announcements) should span over 4000 chars?

Thank you.

News are indeed supposed to be short, but 4000 char is too
short for this kind of site.

I'll try to change the table definition.

Any idea about the other 2 problems?

Nobody can access the urls that you posted, because they are under /admin. This path is protected and only to be seen when you are set up as a site-wide administrator.

For question 3 you could check the serverlog inside /log of your aolserver home directory. What is even better is to get watchdog running. You can see watchdogs output via your browser. The path is /admin/monitoring/watchdog. If nothing is displayed, you have to copy the aolserver-errors.pl to /servers/yourserver/bin of your aolserver home directory. You find this perl script in /web/yourserver/bin/.

I never seen the problem with categories that you are having.
