Forum OpenACS Q&A: What can I do with OpenACS?

hi, I just installed OpenACS 3.2.5 (www.edwinx.com), logged in and created a profile for myself but i'm still not sure what it can do? I read some stuff on Arsdigita and it sounds really good with all it modules and all but how do i access all those modules? Do i have to install them? and currently my index page is the login page, isn't there a different 'front page?'? is there a tutorial or a full documentation on the features of ACS i can read through? thanks. edwin

This very first thing I suggest you to do is to change the "system" user's password.

Your OACS site's system password is still set to the default one!

OpenACS 3.2.5 includes all the standard modules by default. Not all of them are fully configured 'out of the box', but they are all installed when you install OpenACS 3.2.5.

After fixing your security problems, I'd suggest reading carefully through the OpenACS Installation Guide and the OpenACS Getting Started Guide. Both should have been installed with your OpenACS 3.2.5 software, under /doc/openacs/, or in your case http://www.edwinx.com/doc/openacs/

Perhaps the most common and useful module to get started with would be bboard, the module which creates forums like this one. Try http://www.edwinx.com/admin/bboard/ and add a new topic to get started.

Try reading the ACS Docs on your server for a list of all the modules and what they do. Also, take a look at the sites running OpenACS as well as the sites running ACS.

Most importantly, figure out what you want to do first, and then figure out if/how OpenACS can actually help you!

I think Ryan meant to link ACS Docs

I tried to go into www.edwinx.com/admin but the index page does not show up. I've checked the permissions and they are right.

and i don't seem to understand this:
"To do this, log out as yourself (there's a link at “Your Workspace” http://yourservername.com/pvt/home.tcl ) and then log in as the system user (email of "system"). Change the system user's password (the default is “changeme”). Visit the the User Groups Admin pages at http://yourservername.com/admin/ug/ and add your personal user as a site-wide administrator."

what is a "system" email? is it mailto:webmaster@edwinx.com?

thanks

No, no, no. In the entry box next to "Your e-mail address:", type in the word "system" (no quotes). In the entry box next to "Your password:", type in the word "changeme" (no quotes).
