As of now, the HEAD checkout of Assessment is openacs-5-1-compat. Due to the fact that we have not released the software yet no CVS tag has been added. But anyone curious shall try it out.

Since you said that "HEAD does not have to "work"", and it doesn't work quite right after some of your changes.
What branch (or tag or place) can we use to put stable things for people to try?

oacs-5-1 branch is for stable releases, read the documentation https://openacs.org/doc/openacs-5-1/contributing-code.html

The problem is that is stable in the sense that it doesn't break too much so it's usable, but it's not production ready because because it lacks important features and migration to a newer version could be difficult.

therefore there is nothing to release yet? and you aren't willing to release and support and upgrade path anyway...

There where functionalities in the assessment spec that are not yet implemented for assessment.
There are many functionalities that already make assessment usable, the problem is that assessment HEAD was broken and we are trying to fix it.
That's way I'd like some way to make some older stable version available.
We always want to support upgrades but since there's heavy development we don't know how easy or feasible the upgrade would be.
