Yes, this is possible and I did it once. It does not work out of the box though if I remember correctly, as you need to figure out whom to give precedence when calling the site (as both claim this for themselves). There might also be an issue with the custom-master, but it should be resolved if you are using ]po[ 3.4 (and make sure you do that).
