Yes and no.
With the site-map you can add an application, but also add a node in the site map (a folder), set specific permissions and add other applications under the newly created node.

OK, so if I add a folder in the internal representation, then I can either mount a new app there, or make a dir in the www/ tree of the filesystem that can hold .html, .adp and other random content?

Or not?

Yes

You don't need to create further nodes under your mounted application to access its directory tree: simply refer to any content with the corresponding url.
