Forum OpenACS Development: ACS Mail -- Did someone design this?

ACS Mail sounds like a great service. However, there is a serious design flaw in this module. Every message eats up 4 sequence numbers in the object_id sequence. Every message body lives in the system for at most one hour. When the message is sent, the package deletes the message_link object, but doesn't remove the row from the acs_objects table. Result is an important table bloated with dead objects. Reason is it takes forever to delete rows from this table.

Open Force has made available something called "ACS Mail Lite" which does bare-bones mailing.  ACS Mail is, as you mention, a mess.  I would really love to see a task force of two or three people with the time to clean up the entire ACS Mail, ACS Messaging and (now) ACS Mail Lite morass.  I'm not implying the latter's bad, not in the least, but rather that we need to get the entire mail issue straightened out with a good solution used consistently throughout the toolkit.

Any takers?
