Forum OpenACS Development: Performance impact of server upgrade

Here is some information that might be interesting for many sites running OpenACS.

Over the Christmas holidays, we did an upgrade of the server hardware on openacs.org. The new machine is a Xeon Silver 4114 - 10Core 2,2GHz CPU with a MegaRAID 930-16i controller with 4GB flash-backed cache. The new configuration has a nice impact on performance, in particular on the latency during the night, when backup and .apm generation runs (see the spikes up to week 52 below). After the upgrade, these spikes are gone:

Since the new per-thread performance of the new CPU is not significantly better than on the old machine, my current interpretation is that the 4GB flash-backed cache of the RAID controller really helps with the nightly I/O-intense operations.
