Yes, you can, you can get the pieces free:
  • aolserver (recommend 4.0.10 for now)
  • postgresql, either 7.4.something or 8.0.something (or oracle, but that's not exactly free)
  • openacs itself (a tarball of the core, or get what you want from cvs)
  • certain addons to aolserver and pg, notably nspostgres or nsoracle (may not have the exact name right) which lets aolserver interact with the database
See the installation instructions (version 5.2) for details, and post here as/when you want to ask questions.

Thanks Jim,
I've been playing on oacs for a year.
I opened this thread because i wasn't aware about licenses, copyrights, rules laws and etc.

At that moment I was writing a proposal to develop a system using OACS framework, either peharps dotLRN.
I know it's open source but even here there are statements which should be follow.

Even to documentation in the future, keeping them as record. I usually check oacs forums. To me they are sort of a FAQ, howto, tutorials...,
but i guess everyone here is doing that.:)

Anyway I started to read about it, which made look at another sort of docs on OACS and learn a bit the documentation of OACS website.
The thread is open, anyone who wants to write about it about is very welcomed.
