There seem to be two packages that one would assume do the same thing:  Bboard and Forum. (A search through Documentation and previous posts here has failed to illuminate.)

Would appreciate if someone could explain their differences and relative merits.  Or do they somehow work in tandum?

(Also, which package(s) is .LRN using?)

.LRN uses forums... and pretty much all the improvements are going into forums... so i would recommend using that pacakge...
