Eric, try doing a full backup and restore (steps 1 and 8). Once you are comfortable that you can safely get back to your starting point in less than ten minutes no matter how badly you scrambled your current install, a lot the stress associated with changing the database may melt away.
Everybody else:
- did you see the upgrade instructions? if not how can we make them more visible?
- What's missing from the upgrade instructions? Let's capture all these good notes.
- Could someone doing an upgrade present some kind of capture that we could all look at to see how helpful/reassuring it is?
