and a lot of more... =(

Im traying to install oracle 8.1.7 too, on RH 9.0
but in the linkin phase i have the same erros that Vivian is having.
Im following this doc, maybe it can help.

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=es&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=3F091F0E.4070304%40ivpv.ugent.be&rnum=10

I installed succesfully once, but im traying to repeat the process in another computer and it crashes, when i try to save the creation script for the Database. The problem is that in $ORACLE_HOME/bin there are some files that have wrong names, for example, i cant save the script beacuse the file orapwd has another name: orapwd0, and is the same thing with svrmgrl, its wrong name is: svrmgrl0.

Any idead why is that??

I believe others have successfully installed Oracle 8.1.7 and Red Hat 9 so it should be doable. My Oracle install notes might be of some help.

Victor, note that at least for use with OpenACS, you should not have to install any other JDK, not from Blackdown or anywhere else. 8.1.7 comes with the only JDK it needs for the install.
