i've tried it and can't recommend it. i'm now using mailman and am finally satisfied. i thought 'abusing' the notification feature for forums as a mailinglist was a nifty 'hack', but it's not.
depends a lot on your intendet audience though. mine simply got confused. ("am i making a post or sending out an email?")
also, the emails sent out via the notifications regularily lack carriage returns and thus turn out as endlessly long single paragraphs (ugly).
just my 2 cents, go for mailman.
