Forum OpenACS Q&A: adding Slashdot look to news

Would any body like to try to change the look of the news module to
the more modern look of slashdot?  I'd help as much as I can.

Remember that the news module is templated in news-templated/ so that you can actually create a new look for it. You could also use the co-branding module (partner) to make a slashdot look and feel without changing the functionality. Maybe then Slashdot will switch to a *real* database :)

I am actually interested in doing something like that with ACS and I have been studying the ArsDigita docs on that (http://karl.arsdigita.com/projects/template/doc). I don't know much about the partner module (aside that it hasn't been ported to Postgres yet), but the template module is quite complete, but requires XML (AFAIK).

My path will be probably use templates to get the Slashdot-like look but a little different, kind of what http://dev.scriptics.com did.

I was talking about the ACS templating system, where one Tcl file calls an ADP file.

Me too :) I just mentioned the under-development templating system because it sounds promising and quite extensive.

Templating doesn't require XML.  I haven't dug into what Karl's working on, which does include an XML parser written in Tcl (public-domain from elsewhere), so don't know how much is meant to replace the existing templating, how much is meant to augment, and how  much is meant to live in parallel to the existing scheme.  In the aD space all three possibilities are possible.
