Yes, I think Tom and I are on the same wavelength ... if (for instance) a site-node containing a package is considered "content". (a folder that contains other content items which just happens to map to a package rather than a versioned or unversioned content item).
object->named_object->folder
->versioned_content
->unversioned_content
etc ... CR extlinks and symlinks could then be mounted to the site map, too ... hmmm ...
