I think its possible to do it without breaking things. What we currently have is a site map that is able to mount application. The only change I see to is the ability to mount application and content.
Currently it can mount content through application packages like etp and bcms-ui-base. But it would be better that I can natively support CR. Maybe make the site map a bit more pretty. But aside from that I think its possible to have similar effect without having a lot of changes on the lower layers.
