We want to host our openacs student community pages on a virtual
server at a German host called uunet, because we kind of lack money.
Will we need any root rights to install aolserver, postgres driver
and postgresql?

You can install PostgreSQL and AOLserver without root access. For PostgreSQL, you will have to configure it to use a PGDATA other than the default /var/lib/pgsql. You'll also be running AOLserver on a higher numbered port.
