This would be a really nice addition.
In the meantime, you can hack. If you look at project-manager, I show categories in the index page using a dropdown. It's not perfect by any means (and better support for this in list-builder would ROCK), but it works now.
A search box would also be a nice addition. I hack this in project manager, but it's not pretty, and doesn't work very well.
