Forum .LRN Q&A: RFC on login/registration flow

This discussion is inspired by bug number 1107.

The issue is this: previously, if an unrecognized e-mail address was entered, the user was sent off to register as a new user. This results in many duplicate registrations and headaches for site admins.

In version 5 the user is just given an error message ("unknown e-mail") and left at the login prompt. The hope is that this will cause them to try their other email addresses until they figure out which one they registered with here. If they truly do need to reguster they need to click on the Register link, which is there but not exactly jumping out attracting their attention.

In the bug discussion, Lars says he had planned to implement an Amazon-style page which lets the user specify whether they are new or not. Other folks go on to make other suggestions, which you can read by following the link above.

The purpose of this thread is to ask the community - will it be sufficient in the short term if we just make the Register link more promienent somehow? I would like to try this approach first, and go on to more complex solutions only if people are still reporting that their users are getting confused. But I don't want to just ignore all the input in the bug, either.

So... what do y'all say?
