FYI, I got it to work.  OpenBSD 2.8 was the problem: threads might have been an issue.  I upgraded to OpenBSD 2.8-current (on 7 March 2001) and recompiled everything for good measure.  I don't think the problem was just OpenBSD/aolserver: the server would run by itself with its sample config file.
