I wish I had more opportunity to explore higher level usability and design issues, and this thred is being a thought provoking read.
I haven't thought this much about usability design and empirical studies since I tutored some University subjects on similar topics a few years ago :)
Please keep posting your thoughts - dotLRN in particular and the community in general are benefiting.
