Medha,

Sure, in OpenACS we use tree_sortkey. See Jade's article for more info.

This should be a more recent version of the same article.

The context_id field referenced in the article was originally meant for use in defining _permissions inheritance only_.  The article calls past use of the field "ambiguous."  Could someone in-the-know please elaborate on the current best practices with regard to context_id???

Context_id is only for permissions inherietance.

Jeff Davis and I have discuessed morphing the "package_id" column in acs_objects on OpenACS 5.2 to "parent_id". In most cases it would end up being the package_id, but it would allow a real object hierarchy.

But until 5.2 comes out, you don't have much choice about using the context_id unless you are using the content repository.

So that's why I call it ambiguous. It has been used for more than just permissions inheritance.

Jade,

What do you mean you don't have a choice? What choice is there to make regarding context_id?
