Forum OpenACS Q&A: Using final thesis to improve OpenACS

I don't know how this is handled in the rest of the world, but over
here students need to write a six month final paper to get their
diploma. Why should we not try to encourage students to write their
final thesis about solutions with OpenACS and implement those. There
are some issues involved, as what are they going to write about, how
do we pay them, where will they work, whom will they report to and
who is going to be their main point of contact for help with the
thesis. But on the other hand it will provide the OpenACS with more
solutions and papers how to implement those solutions. It will spread
OpenACS to more universities and give us with OpenACES a headstart in
providing the technology of choice for community based solutions. To
make it short and simple, I'll try to convince most of my students to
write their thesis in this area. It would be nice if the community
could help with the issues involved and look for students in their
regional area.

Malte,

I have a number students doing exactly that this semester. They get to use the best tool, learn practical things that will be very usefull in their professional carrers and they are adding things to openACS.

No many other toolkits (only opensource) give you the opportunity to teach how systems work inside. The best way to build bridges is building them (well in bridges you don't usually "throw the first one away" 😊

Quite empowering for students is if they get to work with other student/profesionals from overseas. University projects like these should try to cooperate in this sense.
