Forum OpenACS Q&A: Suggestion: OpenACS.org Internal Bookmarking

To OpenACS Gatekeeper,

I noticed the bookmark module is not in openacs.org. I would like to suggest that the site to provide this module but only allow bookmarking of URLs starting with "http://openacs.org" and / or "http://www.aolserver.com". By doing this, community members can bookmark valuable information within the site, in a centralized location that make sense (locally!) while the server doen't waste resources on the bookmarking of other irrelevant URLs. Valuable information might be old threads in the bboard, one specific patch or a Wimpy presentation in this site. Particularly old bboard threads which get buried after some time.

I believe I am not the only one who found that linking to specific information in the site difficult, and I think this might be a good solution.

Just my 0.02, thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Yes Kenny I think this is right.  There has to be a good way to get
all the informal info on the boards to a formal info like
documentation.  An intermediate will be bookmarks.

Maybe a community bookmark will be good.  Example

Aolserver installation bookmark which contains the different links on
the site and comments.

Maybe after a while somebody with time could then make a documentation
on aolserver installation based from this bookmarks.

The community can contribute to this bookmark and then somebody make a
docu or faq.

Does bboard support for anchors?  For long threads this will be useful
especially on Kenny's idea.  You go straight to the post.

Great idea Kenny.

I just loaded the datamodel and entered a public bookmark - go to https://openacs.org/bookmarks, click on "view public bookmarks", and let me know if you see it.

Feel free to add your own public bookmarks.

This does seem like a cheap and easy kludge to get around the fact that we don't have sufficient navigation or a site map.

I won't worry about folks abusing the availability of this until it happens...

Don,

This is way cool man!
Thank you for accepting my suggestion!

I believe people in the community would not be abusing it.

Now let's submit quality links...

general links would be better, the bookmarks UI makes you filter through everyone's name to find useful public bookmarks.

but it dies when I try it ...

I agree; general links is a much better solution to this problem, if
you can get it to work.

Here's the patch to the general-links problem.

General Link is good but it doesn't allow creation of folders... That makes it a mess regarding categorize the information.

Looks like we gotta make use of combinations of modules to attack the problem.

General links will be much better than bookmarks, believe me ... there
is a mechanism for categorizing links but I've not set that up.

Thanks to Vinod, general-links is now working.  Let's try not to put up more than about 20 or so internal links.  This should help folks get around.  After a few links are in I'll put a link to the index page somewhere on the site.

Note that this is a short-term solution, we'll want something better for the new site.
