Does anybody know to, or has anybody been able to remove the richtext buttons (bold, italic and URL) that appear on IE when you have a a text area?

You can remove the line that appends the javascript call to acs_RichText_WriteButtons in proc template::widget::richtext.

Just go to acs-admin and turn it off in "Templating" parameters.
