Could someone very briefly describe what the categories package is supposed to do? The documentation seems to assume you already know the general idea, and thus just explains the fine details.

Essentially the categorization package allows you to define taxonomies of keywords that can then be used to categorize content (acs objects). It falls under the "knowledge management" umbrella. It provides UI for searching for objects that fall under specified categories. "give me all content that has been categorized as being related to OpenACS Tcl API for localization" that kind of thing.

By providing a generalized categorization package all such keyword assignment, management, navigation etc is handled consistently for objects created by any package, which means you can build sites in which all content can be searched by category etc.

Nis,

To understand how categories can help you, it's easier to give us an example of what it is you are trying to achieve. On a more general note. If you have specific interests or tasks, you you put them in a category box. You only set this up once, for each task you have in mind, and you can simply (hyper)link the categories to a number of individual packages and features, instead of repeating that process.

Questions, drop me a note.
