John, the university of Darmstadt in Germany mentioned that they went for .LRN because they wanted to have an Open Toolkit that allows their Professors to do easy research and especially research in E-Learning. I'm unsure about the status of this effort, but it strengthens your point and one of the more interesting features .LRN has to offer is support for research communities and research projects (using e.g. the project manager).

Thanks a lot for your comments and your insights into Sakai and getting this discussion about Sakai started in the first place. At least I learned quite a bit out of it (and can advise universities better).
