Learning Objects and Pedagogy

Special Issue of the Technology, Instruction, Cognition and Learning (TICL) Journal
An international, interdisciplinary journal published by the OCP Science Publishers.
Title of Special Issue: Learning Objects and Pedagogy

OVERVIEW
In the last decade learning objects have entered our field’s vocabulary. In that short timeframe, they have entered the mainstream, having moved from a completely theoretical construct to a range of practical technical implementations. Much of the documented exploration during this period has focused on the technical aspects. However, we as practitioners of the art and science of learning and instruction should be focused on the pedagogical aspects of learning objects. While the technical and pedagogical have an overlap, more documentation and dissemination of the current state of learning objects as related to pedagogy is needed.

The intent of this special issue is to identify where we, as a community, currently stand with regard to learning objects and pedagogical theory, research, and practice. We encourage all potential authors to submit articles that facilitate coverage of both the breadth and depth of the community’s knowledge as related to learning objects and pedagogy. The goal is to have a special issue documenting the present range of thought, inquiry, and applications in this field of study.

CALL FOR PAPERS
How have learning objects impacted the practice of instruction? Are you developing new learning objects, or developing instruction based on existing learning objects? Are you doing research on the effectiveness of a specific approach to using learning objects? Are you taking learning objects where no learning objects have gone before? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, we invite you to submit a paper for a special issue of the Journal of Technology, Instruction, Cognition, and Learning entitled, “Learning Objects and Pedagogy.”

The vision of this special issue is to document the current state of knowledge in the area of the instructional use of learning objects. Preference will be given to empirical studies, but many types of article will be considered, including lessons learned based on actual experience with learning objects, research into the effectiveness of different designs and / or implementations of learning objects, and new theoretical models for the innovative applications of learning objects. A broad scope of articles will be considered, including “high end” applications such as theory-based dynamic assembly of objects or pedagogical agent-augmented objects, and “low end” applications such as effective learning object use by teachers in public school classrooms.

HOW TO SUBMIT
Directions special issue article submission can be found at http://www.oldcitypublishing.com/TICL/TICL.html. Electronic submission of manuscripts, with copies to the guest editors and each of the editors is strongly encouraged. Each submission should explicitly indicate that it is being submitted for consideration in the special issue on “Learning Objects and Pedagogy”. Potential authors are asked to notify the guest editors (Dr. David Wiley, email: mailto:david.wiley@usu.edu; Marie Duncan, email: mailto:mduncan@cc.usu.edu) as soon as possible of their intent to submit an article. Furthermore, authors are also strongly encouraged (soon after they communicate their intention to submit a manuscript) to submit a tentative title and extended abstract (approx 300 words) to the guest editors. This information will be used to make editorial decisions and assign reviewers.

MANUSCRIPT REVIEW PROCESS
Submissions will undergo the typical review process, and will be reviewed by three members of the TICL journal’s editorial board. Authors will be notified of the results of the editorial process within three months of submission.
