The way to fix that behavior would be to modify the client applet, I believe.  I'm hoping to do some work on the chat client, although I'm not sure when I will get the chance.  There are a number of enhancements I would like to make, particularly the addition of sound, and the issue with the private messaging would be good to fix as well.
