I wouldn't assume most folks are using PG. Well, in numbers that's probably true but in terms of paying clients more probably still use Oracle. We should run a poll someday ...
And if someone were to step up to the plate and offer to start a porting effort to DB2 or some other capable RDBMS, we'd be open to it. If two RDBMS examples side-by-side are a mess, think of what three or more would be like!
So ... yes, I prefer your latter option just as you do.
