Sometimes I have found that the local sendmail or other MTA does not answer to "localhost" or "127.0.0.1".  It may bind only to the ethernet interface and not the loopback interface.

In such cases I set the MailHost parameters under ns/parameters to be the public IP address.  The default mail server configuration usually allows mail clients connecting from the machine's own local ethernet interface to send mail.
