Forum OpenACS Q&A: photo.net source code availability

Collapse

Hi,
I was left with the impression, a while back, that the source code for
photo.net was available to download (at least some version of it).
Does anyone know if and where this code may be available?

Also, I am interested in using the feature-set of photo.net
(community, galleries, articles, comments, surveys, reviews, commerce)
but applying it to a community site for the arts (fine art, music,
literature, theatre, etc.) and society in general (tying the subject
matter of artwork on display to articles on social and political
commentary). Anyway, if OACS4.5 has robust commerce and image gallery
features that can integrate smoothly as they appear on photo.net, then
it is an interesting choice. I am already aware that the community
features are strong. Please comment.

Thanks,
Carlo

Carlo,

I don't think you'll find the exact photo.net sourcecode anywhere,
as it is a fairly customized ACS 3.4, if I remember correctly.

OpenACS 4.5 has similar features so probably offers the right
base for what you're trying to do. The photo gallery is not quite as
powerful as the highly customized photo.net version, but
certainly exists, and ecommerce capability is on its way thanks
to some work from Furfly helping us out with dotLRN events
(specifically paying events).

As Ben suggested you probably do not want to start with the photo.net source tree.  ACS was released from photo.net through roughly version 3.2 and therefore the photo.net site was kept pretty clean.  But since then quite a few programmers of various degrees of experience with Web/db apps have gone through the photo.net code and done things without much thought, planning, review, or documentation.  You'd be much better off starting with a clean ACS 3.4.x from ArsDigita or with OpenACS (the latter is probably best because of the existence of this community where you can get support).

Thank you for your feedback. I couldn't have hoped for more authoritative responses. I'll spend some more time reviewing OACS4.5.
