Maybe I'm just going senile over here, but I swear that something Philip wrote talked about what an application server does and why you don't need one. I found http://www.arsdigita.com/asj/application-servers, which talks specifically about Kiva, but I thought there was one that was more general and went into more detail on why you don't need an application server. Does anyone remember that, and know where to find it?

that's the only one I remember ever reading.

Before trashing the idea of the application server, let me trash the idea of the three-tiered architecture for Web services.

I think that's the section you're remembering.

Maybe you're thinking of Chapter 13, " Interfacing a Relational Database to the Web" (http://www.arsdigita.com/books/panda/databases-interfacing.html) from his web publishing book?
