Forum OpenACS Q&A: ecommerce /subscription

Has anyone used openACS ecommerce module for subscription-based
services?  People still get products (downloadble and mailed), which
still need to be categorized, searchable, etc... but they don't pay
for individual products, they pay a monthly fee.

I'm hoping someone can point out an example site, or mention some
obstacles I may run into (can I just set prices at zero, and as each
item ships, send a confirming email?)  I'm slogging through the docs,
still trying to get everythign running - boy it's painful.

In relation to this I found one ecommerce supplier, Moneris who will
take a cc number and rebill monthly!!!!  (no porn, though, darnit)
compared to some of the other cluelessness[1] I've encountered they
seem great.  We'll see how great if I decide to use them.  They do
not, however, provide a public/private key scheme so I never have to
see cc numbers, I have to get the cc# then post to them.

TD Canada trust, in association with Bell/Nexxia has a system setup
where the merchant never sees the credit card.  The customer needs to
type cc info EVERY TIME.
CIBC, which is a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE financial institution provides no
clearance - style accounts, they 'partner' with several other
companies, everyone taking a cut along the way.  There isn't ever any
real contact info on their website for contacting someone to describe
their system.
Is it this bad in the US? I've been quoted 3% and 6$ by 'secure
gateways' and banks (in tandem)

TIA FY time.

Perhaps my favorite site on the internet uses the ACS for subscription services! The New York Review of Books (http://www.nybooks.com), built by Furfly (http://www.furfly.com) is really a superb resource and a great site.

*blush* Thanks, Talli!

Unfortunately, Sanjeev, we haven't implemented the recurring part.  We're looking at annual billing, not monthly, so we have some time to decide what to do when the first batch of subscriptions comes due.

As far as selling subscriptions goes, it's mostly pretty straightforward.  I ran into a lot of bugs when I first started working with the 4.2 Oracle version of ecommerce but the current ecommerce module has been through several rounds of bug-fixing so it should be all better now.

I didn't set prices to zero, though;  they pay for the subscription just like any other product, but shipping is set to zero.

Good luck!

PS Yes, the situation for credit card clearing is pathetic here as well.

I agree, all those sites are just incredible, some very elegant.  Wish I had that kind of aesthetic sense.  You're not all Italian, are you?
