Just wondering if anybody recently has implemented a X.509 Certificate Authentication?

It looks to me that OpenACS External Authentication does not provide any support at the current point in time.

Would delegating this task to another system an overall more efficient and easier to maintain alternative to the extension of "External Authentication"? Anybody done that before?
