Oracle is available FOR FREE in production as long as the d/b is not larger than 4Gb and is on one CPU. Makes it easier for developers (free like other platforms) and no license for smaller clients. If the client is large enough, they can move to Standard or Enterprise Edition and get the benefits of extra modules, tie into a grid, etc.

The question of supporting Oracle has nothing to do with the cost of Oracle, but rather OUR cost in SUPPORTING Oracle.

Many of us prefer PostgreSQL for reasons that have nothing to do with money, BTW.
