OF has written a new bulk mailer which will probably replace spam eventually.  I agree with you, though, the calendar UI in 3.x spam was nice (I use spam to selectively e-mail users on my own site occasionally) and I'd like to see it come back.  After we decide the future of spam vs. bulk mail that is.
