Hmmm...looking closer I see the sample code they include isn't one of the actual benchmarks they ran.  In fact the benchmark sources aren't included (I'm sure they were in the original dead trees version of this paper).  But the comments at the end of the paper imply that no connection pooling was done in the mod_perl benchmark.  It would be nice to have the actual benchmark sources to see if they're as skewed as the example makes one fear they may be.

One of the comments at the end of the paper supports the experiences of some folks here: "In our humble opinion, servlets and Java are not very well suited to quick site development, a field in which PHP excels."

Yet they reported that PHP suffers, "as rumored", from scalability problems, at least in their benchmarking.

Maybe that's a marketing ... pardon me, evangelism ... message to build on - "OpenACS combines the ease of the scripting approach to site building with enterprise scalability!"  (ugh!)

And they do love PostgreSQL, they have that in their favor!
