Forum OpenACS Q&A: Newbie question about .adp pages.

I just finished installing OpenACS, and I would like to thank
everyone for work they put into the software and the documentation.
I would also like to restate a request for some more novice level
explanations of how the whole system works.

For instance I thought I would play around with the index.adp page.
But first I thought I would make a backup so I could use the links to
get right to the different documents that I would be sure to need.
So, I copied index.adp and index.tcl to old_index.adp and
old_index.tcl.  Then I browsed to /old_index.adp and instead of
getting the default login page, all I got were the links on the left
hand side.  No header, none of the "Congratulations" text,
just "Quick Links".

So I tried creating a directory /web/my_server/www/wes and copying
index.* to that directory.  Browsing to www.my_server.com/wes gives
me a server error.

If someone would like to take a stab at explaining why I can't do
this, I would greatly appreciate it.  And if there is documentation
that I could use to figure it out my self I would appreciate that,
too.

Thanks,
Wes

Hey Wes,

That's a great question and I hope someone can answer it here for posterity's sake. I also would like you to come to the #openacs channel on irc.openprojects.net for some realtime help. People are generally quite happy to answer a question like that there.

This invite is also for posterity's sake :)

You need to copy the queries as well (found in index-oracle.xql and
index-postgresql.xql).

And because of a shortcoming in the query dispatcher you'll have to rename the queries in the query files when you move them.

This is only necessary for pages directly under /www and its subdirectories.  We haven't bothered fixing this because normally a site has one and only one template in /www - index.
