Yup, couldn't agree more.
On a point you raised, I have had one or two people tell me they are bothered by the size of the distribution, but they don't mean the download time, they actually mean that for a newbie its 'looks' like a lot of stuff and thats a bit daunting. I guess, now I think about it, if I hadn't come across it before, it does seem quick a bit of code there.
But I think it not a question of splitting up bits, but could be immediately and effectively releived by improved introductory documentation explaining whats there, whats important, what you don;t need to worry about initially.
