I was wondering if anyone investigated any further into a spell checker for OpenACS. Maybe an integration with aspell or some other methods, resulting in a procedure that takes any text and a language and returns HTML with red font around the words not found for that language.

Ola has done an extension to ad_form that does spell checking.  I think you'll see it or something based on it land in the toolkit in the 4.6.2 or 4.7 timeframe.
