Jon - the calendar package is more than just a GUI around acs-events. It derives a cal-item from acs-events, which means that you can only put subtypes of acs-event on a calendar, which is extremely awkward in practice. If you want to put something stored in the CR on a calendar, you have to copy stuff to an acs-event and have no control over how it is displayed, for instance.
